This Ain't No Joke - THE DARK KNIGHT trailer rocks!

Hey folks, Harry here and I can say - with no sense of doubt - that THE DARK KNIGHT is going to be fucking awesome! First off - I love pirated trailers - I like the buzz of the audience, the point where the camera man got a bit excited. This is how we first saw that amazing trailer for THE PHANTOM MENACE - but the story at the end of the day will be quite different. I must see that JOKER Imax footage - I hear you can see Nicky Katt as SHOTGUN SWAT riding shotgun with Commissioner Gordon himself. Here you go, I don't know how long this will last, but lick it up while it lasts!

Jesus Christ... I can't believe how bad ass that looks. Ledger NAILED The Joker. Ledger IS The Joker. God damn... Jack Nicholson looks like a fucking clown compared to him. No pun intended.

    Snow-King choose snowblowers, here's why...

    by Pipple

Oh and yes a trailer usually misleads the audience, especially nowadays. I expect the film to have maybe half the coolness of the trailer as usual.

    Bootleg trailers

    by Crestfallen

I have to agree with Harry about the captured audience adding to the thrill of bootleg trailers. The Comic Con audience's reaction to the bootleg iron man gave me additional chills. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause when the Mach I suit first broke on the screen, the same for the Mach III. When the official trailer was eventually posted in QT, it felt like it was missing something after having watched the bootleg version repeated for a month.

  • December 14, 2007 3:47 AM CST

    Did anyone else notice...

    by That 70s Venom

... in the trailer when Heath Ledger is facing down Batman on his bike and he says "Hit Me!" it sounds sort of like Jack Nicholson's Joker when he is flying away in his helicopter towards the end of '89 Batman and says something like "Hey, Junior Birdman!" or something. It sounds like the same accent. I don't know how to place which accent it is though.

    by Kevin Bosch

"The Dark Knight". Not "Batman: The Dark Knight" (which still would've been a good title). Just "The Dark Knight". Amazing. I can't believe there's going to be a Batman movie without the word Batman in the title. We've come a long way.

  • December 14, 2007 3:56 AM CST

    Fucking hell...

    by Bono Luthor

I have had tiny doubts about the look/handling of the joker but hearing the voice and seeing him in a little bit of action has blown them away. This is edging out Indy as my number 1 must see for 2008. Of course, that could change if we get a piss your pants Indy trailer or if William Shatner was actually going to be in Trek, but that's another story!

    by seppukudkurosawa

Featuring Tyler Mane as Batman and Joe Don Baker as Mr Freeze. Takes place in a little shack somewhere on the Appalachian Mountains in the middle of Winter, where Batman has gone to hide away from his abusive stepfather/uncle, Mr Freeze. Numerous buggerings ensue. Soundtrack by Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

    Hmmmm

    by sonnyfern

I was pretty skeptical about Heath Ledger as The Joker, but now that I see what they're going for, I kinda dig it. It's still not THE JOKER, you know what I'm saying? I think the animated series still nailed him best, but this is a damn interesting take. Looks like the darkest Batman yet. Now I just hope they nail Two-Face so I can forget that god awful Batman Forever shit.

I love PHANTOM MENACE - however, that is not the popular opinion. It seems that most folks didn't enjoy it. And some even claim that episodes 2 and 3 were worse. Crackheads.

This summer's Lucasfilm product is my #1 must-see.

    by darthbinks1220

Revenge of the Sith owned Begins ass. Crystal Skull will do likewise to Knight. I forgive the creator for Menace, Clones, Ewoks. Only Cameron can top Lucas/Spiels. Box office predictions: Indy IV- 400 mil domestic, billion worldwide. Begins 2- 275 mil in N.A., 520 mil globally.

    by Pipple

Because Lucas stopped putting jar jar in every scene. Every scene without him in phantom menace is delicious chocolate coated pussy I'd say. Still written and directed by lucas but not annoying as hell. What a shame...

  • December 14, 2007 4:12 AM CST

    Indy will bomb, I'm afraid

    by George Newman

I absolutely LOVE the Jones' flicks, but no one outside the geek community wants or cares about a sequel. Harrison Ford is no longer Box Office gold. neither is spielberg.

These are horrible truths to face, but they are true none the less.

  • December 14, 2007 4:15 AM CST

    Phantom Menace and Batman Forever

    by That 70s Venom

Both of these movies are underrated, actually. Yes, Schumacher did work on Batman Forever, but Tim Burton actually helped produce it. Burton didn't have ANYTHING to do with Batman & Robin. A lot of people tend to lump Batman Forever and Batman & Robin together, as if they are both equally as bad as eachother. But Batman Forever is 100 times better than Batman & Robin if you would actually watch it again and pay attention to it, they got a lot of shit right in it. I loved Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and especially Revenge of the Sith, so you cock suckers can blow me and I'll shoot a fat wad in your mouth for that one. Fucking Lucas-haters, you need to STFU. And darthbinks1220... dude, wtf, are you some kind of fucking clairvoyant or some shit dude??? Get the fuck outta here with that portentous bullshit man.

  • December 14, 2007 4:15 AM CST

    Needless competition

    by Crestfallen

I don't understand why people always tout that one upcoming movie will own all the other eagerly anticipated ones. I'm looking forward to next year for TDK, Iron Man, Indiana Jones, 007, Hulk, etc. I hope they're all good and I'm glad that movies I want to see are being made.

  • December 14, 2007 4:16 AM CST

Indy won't bomb -- Because of Shia

    by zillabeast

He has wayyyy to much young teen girl appeal. It loathes me to say this but he will save the movie at the box office.

    by George Newman

I'm not saying Indy will suck, I just doubt the public's interest in the movie.

  • December 14, 2007 4:20 AM CST

I hate to say that, but the trailers wasn't all that.

    by DerLanghaarige

We see Batman, the Joker, hear him say some bad puns about laughing (Yes, we got, he is an evil joker, that's why he has to say stuff like "Why so serious" before he kills someone) and got LOTS OF EXPLOSIONS!
Sorry, but while the trailer for "Batman Begins" really built up some excitement, this one makes it look like, well..."Die Hard 4.0"! No atmosphere, no suspense, just actionshots.
Maybe the movie will be better but the trailer looks mediocre.

  • December 14, 2007 4:21 AM CST

heh, i was just gonna talk about teen appeal and then...

    by George Newman

    you reminded me about Shia.

  • December 14, 2007 4:22 AM CST

Indy IV doesn't NEED Shia to save it...

    by That 70s Venom

... yes it is true. Harrison Ford and Spielberg may no longer have the box-office magic they once had, but that doesn't fucking matter when it comes to Indiana mother fucking Jones, you idiots. You are talking about one of the most beloved cinema icons in the history of the silver screen. It wouldn't matter if Harry Connick Jr. was playing Indiana Jones and Jaleel White was playing his son, every mother fucker over 15 will be crawling out of their parents' crusty smelly ass basement to slap down their 13 bucks to see some fucking Indy action again. Nuff said.

  • December 14, 2007 4:23 AM CST

  • December 14, 2007 4:25 AM CST

    You know...

    by Bono Luthor

it may be possible that more than one film 'owns' next year. This obsession with one film being the best and pissing on others is an unpleasant side product of capitalism and it's horrible desire to get everybody and everything competing against each other 24/7 rather than co-operating, smiling at each other at regular intervals, and living in harmony. We do not have that problem here in the Peoples Republic of The United Kingdom because we are now all communists. Since Mr Blair left anyway. Heh. Trailer fking rocks!

  • December 14, 2007 4:25 AM CST

Gonna wait & see this in IMAX.

    by LoneGun

But it feels like torture to have even a crappy bootleg dangling before me. I'm dying to see it! I feel like I've been waiting forever for this movie. Nice to see more DARK KNIGHT enthusiasm on AICN. This film will be huge.

    by darthbinks1220

After a nineteen-year absense, a much anticpated Indy Jones flick will fail to gross say, National Treasure/Croft: Tomb Raider money?! Rhiiiiight. Indy 4 will sandwich between At World's End(1.060 bil) and Dead Man's Chest(960 bil) for something like 7th all-time unadjusted at the worldwide box office. Trust me. As for the gungians, Jake Lloyd, gay podracing, bad acting, stunted dialogue, crappy cgi, etc------ I concur with Pipple on Episodes I & II. On the other hand, Sith is the shit. The acting is great. The effects are awesome. The story is gripping. I love Hayden Christensen, and Palpatine. I applaud evil thanx to Episode III. The force will live forever.

now THAT's the spirit. That is what I like to hear from my fellow talk-backers. Most of the goons on here seem to enjoy excoriating Nolan's work when he is the savior of the Batman films. Schumacher was like Satan and Nolan is like Jesus, he just came along and saved everyone from ultimate embarassment.

  • December 14, 2007 4:34 AM CST

    Pipple...

    by That 70s Venom

... once again, your rational fails you. Apparently you don't recall, but in Batman Begins, Nolan had an explicit shot of Bale's ass in his bat suit as well, so that wasn't just a Schumacher thing.

One of forever's redeeming qualities, Kidman

    by Pipple

I liked forever for its cool parts, even batman and robin isn't as bad as it's made to seem online, no movie is. Out in the real world people have work or school that drains them and then go watch a movie to escape life for a few hours, not criticize it... That said in hindisight a lot of what I liked is absolute dreck and forever doesn't hold up over time... that's what happens when movies age, time changes... as penguin said "things change..."

... you refer to a teaser trailer for an action movie as lame because it shows a bunch of action shots??? What kind of sense does that make?? For one thing, Batman movies are ACTION movies, so comparing it to Die Hard is actually a logical thing to do, so I don't know if you meant that as an insult or what. Besides, the Die Hard movies are very well done. Not only that, but this IS a teaser trailer, not the full trailer. So if it's atmosphere you're looking for, expect that to be in the full trailer. Teasers are supposed to be flashy and action-packed, not drawn-out with beefy ambience like full trailers.

Unless I missed it, or unless they're holding him off til the next trailer, or unless it's way too early in the morning to be reasoning with myself...

    TDK

    by The Real MiraJeff

I saw the trailer tonight in front of I Am Legend and I thought it looked pretty cool. There's no doubt Nolan will deliver the goods again. Here's the thing. Warner's marketing dept. is going a little overboard with this Joker thing. The movie is called The Dark Knight. It's about Batman. Enough with the Joker. We get it. Save him as a little bit of a surprise. They're just giving away too much too soon with regard to that character. He seems to be dominating the marketing campaign and the film isn't even out for six months. The Jumper trailer I saw tonight possibly kicked even more ass than the one for TDK (who thought a Hayden Christensen movie would ever look good?) but it too, gave away far too much. The reason Cloverfield got so much hype was because it came out of nowhere and kept things mysterious. Now they've overplayed their hand with this five minute clip. Same goes for a lot of Apatow's work. The week a movie opens you're bombarded with viral videos and leaked 'outtakes' and maybe the overexposure helps raise the box office take a few million but there are some instances where it just seems to be a little much. I just think that studio marketing depts have taken the surprise out of movies these days, but I suppose they're just doing their jobs, and that's just like, my opinion, man, so...

Ledger's Joker: great laugh, bad voice...

    by Sledge Hammer

Seriously, that voice he's putting on I just didn't buy at all, it just sounded way too...deliberate. He nailed the laugh though. Oddly, this is pretty much opposite of what I anticipated (good Joker voice, bad laugh) so shows how much I know.

All that aside, really pumped for this, and the teaser, or what I could see of it anyway, looked great. If it wasn't for a certain hat wearing, whip snapping generically surnamed fella's latest adventure, this would be my number one most anticipated movie next year. As it stands it's second in line, but damn if I aint hanging out for it all the same.

They have to focus on the villain, The Real MiraJeff

    by I Dunno

In the last 20 years there have been five Batman movies, with Batman (nipples notwithstanding) looking pretty much the same. What is a trailer featuring mostly Batman going to offer anyone? Plus, I think they're also still trying to make sure everyone is aware that this is a new Bat-verse, different from Burton and that other guy.

So even though keeping the Joker under wraps would have made for a better movie experience, for the suits it's not a good marketing decision.

If Jaws was made today, the trailer would include the scene where the shark sinks the boat. We have to live with that.

No difference between this and the Batwing scene.

    by Fawst

None at all. Except for the fact that the Joker is firing what looks like a minigun at Batman. And Batman ISN'T shooting at Joker (and missing horribly, by the way. Didn't Batman realize that by swaying just a tiny bit to the right or the left while shooting at the Joker that he would have tore his shit up?) I think this film will show the difference between the two (Batman vs. TDK and Batman vs. The Joker): Batman won't kill him. In the end, he'll bring him to Arkham Asylum. That's why he doesn't run him down or shoot his ass. You heard it here first.

    FAWST IS RIGHT...

    by That 70s Venom

Fawst knows what he is talking about. I like how he drew the parallel between '89 and TDK because that's exactly what I interpreted when I saw the trailer. If you want to get technical though, in '89 Burton, Bats didn't so much kill The Joker as precipitate his demise. Furthermore, yeah I know it was unrealistic how Bats' missiles and bullets were totally off the mark when he was firing at Joker, but it made for nice dramatic effect when it showed the Joker just standing there mockingly grinning at Batman and not getting a scratch on him and then pulling out that hilarious pistol and BOOM down goes Batsy.

He looked and sounded great as the Joker in that trailer, so it looks like he pulled it off. The movie is looking good so far.

My only problem with the trailer (apart from the shoddy bootleg quality) is that there were a bit too many explosions in order to keep the meatheads satisfied. Batman Begins was a bit more intellectual than all the previous Batmans, so I hope this one isn't dumbed down for the mass audience who likes to see things go 'BOOM'.

    Too much Joker?

    by icen9ne

I think BATMAN BEGINS was pretty weak on the villain side -- really setting up Wayne's psyche (for once). I think it's appropriate that Joker be Batman's equal in this film (marketing and screen time - wise) b/c it's Batman's first true test. He is up against something so beyond his understanding that he goes through some real hell in order to succeed or at least survive. So, the overabundance of Joker doesn't bug me. It's warranted.

  • December 14, 2007 8:03 AM CST

I dont usually cuss people out...

    by vadakinX

But fuck the prequel haters. Menace, Clones and Sith rocked. Did Lucas make mistakes? Sure he did...a little too much Jar Jar, some choppy editing...but everything else that was "wrong" with the movies was there in the originals. I would have liked Anakin to have been a little older and Obi-Wan to have been the one to find him in Menace, sure and Sith has some awesome stuff cut out that I'd like to see put back in, but there's also things I'd change about the originals. The movies as they stand are great family movies, full of fun and action...and THAT's what Star Wars is about. A lot of people tend to forget that.

Anyways, TDK trailer is cool...as far as the Joker goes, there seems to be little references to Nicholson, Hamill and Romero in the performance as well as Ledgers own take. I doubt it was intentional, but its cool.

    Batman Forever

    by rbatty024

The most overlooked of the franchise, because it isn't as godawful as Batman & Robin and neither is it good like Burton's films. If you accept the premise of a return to the campy 60's Batman then Batman Forever is about the best you're going to get (except for the Adam West movie, which is hilarious). However, if you think (rightfully so) that the campy Batman of the 60's should have stayed in the 60's then Batman Forever's take on Batman is flawed from the beginning.

What's amazing to me is that there was a petition going around in the late eighties urging that Adam West be cast as Batman. People just can't see past the last version of the character. I think something similar is happening here with people who claim Ledger is ripping off Jack Nicholson. Ledger's Joker seems more intense/insane than Nicholson's "funny" version. I actually liked Nicholson's version of the Joker and I'm not yet sold on Ledger, but they're not the same version of the Joker at all.

Anyway, whatever you say about Burton's Batman, at least it wiped clean from public memory the "Batman-as-a-joke" of the Adam West years, similar to what Frank Miller had done earlier in the decade (although Dennis O'Neil deserves much more credit than Miller does for updating Batman in the 70's). It's ironic that with Miller's All Star Batman & Robin he's now returning to the Batman-as-a-joke years he tried to sweep under a rug. How the mighty have fallen.

Yes, it is a good little 3 minute "movie", but the one you see in the theater will be 90+ minutes. A good trailer is better than a shitty one, but they both don't mean that much. Oh well, I guess it's fun to be excited for something, so go ahead and enjoy yourselves. We all need hope.

At least Miller is now telling a different kind of joke. And I actually think the '60s Batman is a great show for what it was. Gorshin's Riddler was perfect for ANY incarnation of the Dark Knight. He went from goofy to deadly serious on a dime. Unironically fantastic performance.

Its's Batman comming out of the shadows to fuck up your world. To break your arm or snap your neck. A violent, swift lightning strike of punishment that these thugs deserve. If you want him to stand in the middle of a circle of badguys... each waiting their turn to have a crack at him while he spin kicks etc. then go watch The Matrix. Like Liam said "This is not a dance!" Maybe Nolan didn't capture that on film...but I like that approach. The last thing I need to see is another ultra- choreographed dance scene. BSB might disagree...he mentions Dancing With The Stars on these TB's enough already.

    Joker - Marketing

    by fatdrunkandstupid

The joker is the most iconic bad guy in comic book history. Warner Borthers did a botched job with Batman Begins. It opened poorly but had legs, which doesn't happen for movies of this size anymore - this was a clear sign of a great movie that just wasn't sold well. SO, in order to rectify that they're going a little overboard with the joker promotion to really amp this shit up, which I think they're doing well. But the big point is, in terms of the film the Joker's presence won't be to the detriment of the Batman character. The entire point of remaking the movie (from Nolan's perspective) was to finally make a movie ABOUT Batman, who got the short end of the stick in all other film incarnations. I gaurantee Batman will go toe to toe with the Joker, and it will be fucking intense. Oh and Ledger's voice gives me chills.

No film outside of Begins has captuerd Batman's true nature. Until now; when Bats lands on the roof of that car? Game over...when are people going to learn, that there is only ONE Batman director, and only ONE actor who portrays him.

I agree that Adam West's Batman was a good show for what it was (although I've only seen one or two episodes, I'm more familiar with the movie). The movie is absolutely hilarious. The Russian diplomat pounding his shoe on the podium in an obvious reference to Khrushchev is pretty clever, and stuff meant for the adults to get and to go over the heads of most kids. The "bat shark repellent" still makes me laugh. I've heard people refer to that scene with disdain, but what they don't realize is that it's a goddamn joke and they should get a sense of humor.

I just think that Adam West, unfortunately, became synonymous with Batman, when he's a much richer, more varied character. It was time to put that version of the character to bed and I think Burton successfully did so.

As far as Frank Miller's All Star series, I can't help but be disappointed. I like Miller a lot, and I even liked the much maligned Dark Knight Strikes Again, but his All Star is just not funny. True, the kind of humor is updated, but I can't help but feel he's making fun of the whole Batman universe in a mean spirited self-hating way more than he's having a few lighthearted jabs. Comic book characters shouldn't be taken too seriously, but neither should they be the fodder for easy, unimaginative, jokes.

    by LowKeyCinema

Because he seems like more of a character and less of a caricature. Nicholson's Joker works well in Burton's Batman, but at the end of the day it's still Jack in clown makeup dancing to Prince. I don't see that working in the world Nolan's creating.

  • December 14, 2007 8:59 AM CST

Here are a couple of reasons why Ledger's Joker is different...

    by rbatty024

from Nicholson's, as I can tell from the clip. He brings a physical presence Nicholson couldn't at his age. He's set in a more real world and less part-cartoon part-real Burton world so he has a more intimidating presence. There are fewer "jokes" (from what we've seen) than Nicholson delivered. Nolan seems more interested in The Joker's pscyhe than Burton was with Nicholson's.

I really liked Nicholson as the Joker and I really liked Burton's Batman movies, but I also don't want them to regurgitate the same thing. Batman is a great character because he's malleable and different artists, whether they be writers, directors, comic book artist, or the like, can find something new and exciting in the same primordial material handed down through the years. The same elements can be rearranged to make something that's still recognizably Batman, but also something we haven't seen before. Ledger is slowly eroding my skepticism.

The problem with the last Batman anthology was the bat had a nasty habit of killing off his foes. You brought us Arkham for a reason, the movie better have Joker laughing his ass off in a straightjacket at the end. Oh and Eckhart walking out of the shadows with an iconic looking dual-colored suit on, with the last scene him flipping his coin. Don't kill Joker PLEASE!

    Superhero "canon"

    by rbatty024

Those who decry superhero films because they don't follow the original comic make me laugh. If there was a direct adaptation to the original Bob Kane comic they would complain that it needed to be update. "Canon" changes. So long as certain elements are maintained I don't care what a director does, so long as he makes it interesting.

I may be repeating myself, but the reason why Batman is such a strong character is because he's malleable. You can do so many things with Batman and make him different in so many ways with the essential elements of his character. If this wasn't the case, and people didn't change the character over the years, then there would no longer be a Batman because people would get bored with the character, much less because he would seem outdated.

I was having no luck with the getvideo link or whatever it was. Great trailer. BTW, I had a day off this week so I sat down and watched Batman '89, and Batman Returns, and I've gotta say they still hold up, even today. You can tell they're def. Burton movies, but the score's great, the Batsuit is excellent, and that Batmobile is still awesome looking. I have nothing to say about Forever or 'And Robin, but those first two are great movies in and of themselves. As for Nicholson, I don't think he was hamming it up at all, I mean he was playing the Joker, a character by definition that is eccentric.

is no way to go through life, son. But you do make an excellent point. As does LowKeyCinema. Begins puts Batman in context of a somewhat more 'realistic' world. And Joker is as unrealistic as it gets. So how is he going to work into this? I for one am very stoked to find that out. I didn't much care for Nicholson's Joker, actually preferring Devito's Penguin more. But all four of the previous incarnations lacked something that Nolan's 1st movie didn't. And that's respect for the source material. However, the Joker's origin seems implausible in this setting. I wonder how they are going to handle it.

    Is Joker Scottish? Irish?

    by jorson28

"Got some fight in 'ya. I like it!" Definitely a Scottish accent -- maybe Irish, I don't know. I could never figure out the Joker's voice here. In the teaser he sounded like the President ("I'm a man of my worrrrd"). I like what I see, but given this Joker has no other alias, no real-life identity and no real backstory to speak of, Ledger seems to be trying real hard to sound like a clown or a big kid with a.d.d. That said, I can't really say it's a criticism because I'm with the consensus on this one -- I don't think we could have asked for a better trailer. Let's just hope the movie is as good.

THAT WAS BOB KRANE'S JOKER YOU COMPLETE MORONIC BUFFOON. The original joker painted his face for his crimes to the point that it started to stain his face... THEN the ret-conned it to be the acid bath. Not to mention the orignal joker was BRUTAL. He wasnt the joker because he played tricks and pranks but because he KILLED PEOPLE WHILE HE LAUGHED AT THEM DYING. The problem is too many of you underwear stains have taken the 60's version of the joker to be closer to the true one... its not even close, they tonned the Joker down in the 50's because of the comic codes. The original one was as brutal nasty and sick as Ledgers portrayal. If they added anything it was the facial scaring. But thats it.

I know this has been said multiple times, but I don't get all the hate. Batman Begins was genius, everything I wanted it to be. It's a Batman movie, with good actors, a strong plot, and great action! How can you complain about that??? I think fanboys have become so jaded that they don't know how to say something is good anymore. All that bullshit that Burton's is better? Maybe when you go to sleep at night and imagine it, but go back and watch it again, there are so many issues with those films, even that first one. Joker wasn't a 50+ year old car salesman (which is Nicholsen's version in my mind) he was a freaking lunatic! Ledger looks like a nutjob, that is perfect!

Yeah... but I have to disagree with you on one thing. Tommy Lee Jones should've felt constrained to the authenticity of his character's source material more than he did. Two-Face isn't The Joker, but he was portrayed with Nicholson's caliber of silliness, unfortunately. However, as for Carrey as The Riddler, he had a little more wiggle room in the silliness department but I concur that he did take it a few beats too far in key moments of the film. It was more Jim Carrey acting like Jim Carrey than Jim Carrey acting like The Riddler. They were both good choices for the characters, but they just had poor direction on behalf of Shumacher. Under the guidance of a more experienced and strict director they could've pulled the characters off wonderfully, no doubt in my mind.

    No arguments, Seagrass?

    by sokitome

You're entire response to what I said has been about grammar usage and spelling. So what is your response to my argument you can't judge a performance by only watching five seconds of it? Where's your answer to that? That is the same logic as saying you liked or disliked a novel by reading the back cover. Think before opening your dumb mouth.

    'face paint' theories for complainers

    by zom-bot.com

like someone in another thread said- the original concept was that the joker's face was painted- either so much or by such caustic paint that his skin eventually was stained by it.it was kind of his own punishment by that point, driving him madder. so i have a feeling that this story kinda goes that way. Face it, if you want to look like a clown, are already nutso, and need to go commit heavy crimes- do you go by some drug store halloween makeup that will rub off in the wind?- or do you grab the cheap, lead filled old expired white industrial paint you have laying around your abandoned warehouse? my guess is the latter, and there's no tellin' what enough treatments of that will do. if anyone wants to try, let us know. in every pic it looks like the black and red run, but the white (that in early pics looks so thickly applied) begins to stain and crack off, revealing his skin kinda looks grayish white as a result. we can hope?

    by zom-bot.com

it's true- all this dark knight stuff hit HARD right when the bad reviews of Legend started to trickle in. Not that the movie is BAD, but that the CGI kills everything else great the movie had going for it.

so release all the TDK tie-ins to save the day and boost numbers because people will go just to see the preview. (like we weren't anyway)

Right there, and Ledger's Joker Laugh sounds like a guy I know who fucking laughs like a goddamned maniac, all breathy and wheezing, like he's about to have a fucking heart attack...Sweeney, I'm sorry man, but that's how you laugh...But seriously, the first flick was great, and this one looks like the second half of the first movie, like it's meant to be part of the same flick...not the disjointed 89 'series' of films was. 'Batman Returns' was actually alright....Max Shreck was funny. But this looks bad to the ass and back.

    by micturatingbenjamin

I can like the prequels and Batman right? It's not like against the religion of the dork, or something to like a lighthearted space flick...AND a comic book movie? I liked Sith a lot, thought it did everything right. I just wish it would have been Clone Wars, Rise of the Sith, and a third actual Darth Vader movie, and leave out the 'where threepio came from' episode. I don't need the pilot episode, I just want the kickass stuff. Like begin Clone Wars with the last thirty minutes of TPM and we stop with the 'CSPAN Star Wars'. Money...

TDK is going to be great, and while I'm finishing off my popcorn, I'll buy a ticket for Indy, and go watch him raid some tombs and wombs.

RE: Hype + Joker Escape Theories

    by jorson28

Not that anyone here has reason to give two shits what I think, but since Joker's incarceration is obviously NOT the end of the movie, there are a couple of ways he could escape or be released: 1.) The old fashioned way -- fight his way out. 2.) Someone bails him out, maybe a mob guy since it's been inferred that he's been enlisted by the mob to take down Batman. And then there's a third, highly unlikely possibility: He has no ID, they can't print him and have either none or no usable evidence, so he's let go on his on recognizance -- highly, highly, ridiculously and embarassingly improbably given the "realistic" tone of Nolan's bat-universe, but remotely possible considering the above conditions and the fact that the police must still be corrupt. As far as hype goes, I think this is getting more hype than "Begins" because "Begins" was sort of an experiment. There wasn't too much riding on it because, despite its unusual star power, it wasn't a very glitzy production by blockbuster standards nor was it really expected to be a big hit -- and it wasn't a big hit -- made less in cinemas than "Superman Returns" did the following year - until it hit DVD, then the word-of-mouth caught up with it and everyone and their long lost pet bought the DVD. I will agree that they're making way too much of Ledger's Joker in these campaigns, especially since they went to all that trouble to film his first appearance in the movie in IMAX, presumably to make it "special," but how could it be considering IMAX doesn't necessarily make the character look differently and we've already seen just about every visual incarnation of the Joker online, both through leaked photography and "official" press. And, to top it all off, they're essentially blowing their wad seven months before the movie opens by showing the same opening sequence on IMAX screens before the IMAX showings of "I Am Legend." Sadly, I doubt Nolan is having much say in this film's marketing, even though the trailer seen today does kick ass (to say the very least).

    by maverick2484

...I love the way he does this line. It's so off-kilter, like you're not sure if he's mentally slow, or menacing or just very deliberate. That's the essence of what I've gathered from this trailer, that Ledger is giving a true acting job and not just taking another page from the "LOOK AT ME! I'M A PSYCHO CAUSE I SMILE WHILE I KILL PEOPLE!" playbook. That along makes this movie worth being excited for. Nolan has populated his Batman universe with character actors who are actually internalizing these characters and trying to give their performances some substance. This is in direct contrast to the bloated final days of the former Batman franchise, where the biggest star of the moment was cast as the villain and basically played themselves, regardless of how utterly ill-suited for the character they were. When Bale's Batman fights Ledger's Joker, it's going to be a physical showdown between order and chaos - exactly what their relationship is supposed to be about. I can't wait.

Seriously....how can anyone be hyped by this trailer?

    by Ash Talon

How can anyone be excited by Ledger's performance based on this trailer? We hear him laugh and deliver a few ho-hum lines. Certainly, there's not much of an impression left on me. Do geeks love the Joker so much that they'll get excited about any appearance by the character? Overall, not a very affecting trailer. Okay, it's a teaser right, hence the lack of any story elements? Fine. But where's the structure to the trailer? Why doesn't it build to something? It just looks like any other big budget action movie. And if you remove the white face make-up from Heath, isn't he just another action villain from a Die-Hard rip-off. Just another case of fanboy overeaction.

    by That 70s Venom

"Do geeks love the Joker so much that they'll get excited about any appearance by the character?" YES!!! EXACTLY!!! YOU JUST NAILED IT!!! YOU ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION WITH YOUR OWN QUESTION!!! Apparently you didn't grow up with Batman and the Joker like most of us did. To see this bootleg trailer, even in the shitty quality that it has been presented to us, is like better than 20 orgasms in a row to us. I am sorry that you don't feel passionate about anything in your life in the same way that we feel about this, but that's your problem, not ours. So quit taking it out on us. I wish I could make you see and understand what we're going through when we see Heath Ledger tearing up the screen with his badass performance in the new trailer, but if you watched it and you didn't feel anything, then you're a lost cause, and you can never understand. It's something where you really had to grow up with the Batman mythos to really understand what the hype is all about. Personally, I can't imagine my childhood or teenage years without being exposed to the legendary Batman or the Joker or any of the other parts of the Batman Universe. I can't wait til this trailer is in Quicktime... "HIT MEH!"

It was just a thought...they show images of Batman while he's saying it but there's a good chance he's saying it to a third person...could even be Dent. Just a hunch, but I think he's talking to Crane trying to get more of the poison or for him to make some laughing gas, somthing like that. The attack on the Narrows and the fear toxin is going to be a big storyline in TDK, just look at the Gotham Times. I bet Scarecrow will have a decent role in the film. I hope so at least. I thought Cillian Murphy was good.

Batmobile lost a wheel and the joker got away

    by ThePilgrim

Hence the cycle!!!----------------- The trailer shows the Joker hanging outside the back window of a cop car laughing his ass off. Somebody did something to the cop driving that car. So it most likely flips over and he gets out or something like that. Mob probably shot the cop.

    Meh!

    by JacksParasites

Batman Begins was wasn't bad but somehow managed to suck all the fun out of Batman. Now I'm completely not excited about this one. I'm sure I'll see it, but as much as I love Batman, I'm utterly indifferent about this film. Bat's girl is in danger again--big surprise. I'd rather be seeing another Marvel film or another installment of YouTube's It'sJustSomeRandomGuy's Marvel/DC videos, which are just as awesome.

I'm Surprised Batman '66 Doesn't Get More Love

    by Aquatarkusman

Commissioner Gordon: Penguin, Joker, Riddler... and Catwoman, too! The sum of the angles of that rectangle is too monstrous to contemplate! // Batman: We've been given the plainest warning. They're working together to take over... // Chief O'Hara: Take over *what*, Batman? Gotham City? // Batman: Any *two* of them would try that! // Commissioner Gordon: The whole country? // Batman: If it were three of them, I would say yes, but *four*? Their minimum objective must be... the *entire* world.

    Two-Face

    by Autodidact

They couldn't have gotten Two-Face more wrong in Batman Forever. The only accurate part of Two-Face's portrayal was right at the end, when Batman talks him into flipping a coin. Tommy Lee Jones stops shouting for the first time in the movie and becomes sad... wish the entire performance had been like that, with just a few genuinely scary outbursts of insanity. As far as the makeup... yeesh... couldn't believe it when I first saw the poster art. The one thing I really hope Nolan does with Two-Face is dress him normally. Both sides of his character like to be dapper, and neither side looks dapper in half a fucking suit. The real Two-Face wears a suit with one design, like everyone else.

I hope that he starts to grow a taste for the dapper lifestyle as the real joker did and start to put his make-up on a little cleaner. I think that will make a lot of people happy. He just looks to messy. Love the scars, but make the makeup a little cleaner within the scars and greener hair and you have the best joker ever.

The Joker was best portrayed by Caesar Romero

    by im_a_man_of_my_word_ha_ha_ha

    Robin

    by jdl82

Burton's Batman was dark and twisted for the sake of being dark and twisted. Burton turned a pro-PETA burglar into a supernatural dominatrix, and a tuxedo-wearing mob boss into a mutant leader of a sewer circus who bled fecal matter. And, as with all Burton movies, there was the constant presence of choir boys chanting "La la la la..." in the background. Burton even warped Batman himself, portraying him as willing to kill evil-doers. Batman's costume also featured eyeshadow attached to the mask (as seen in Batman Returns); and a thick leather cape that never got in the way (during the scene in which Batman first encounters Jack Napier, where he is hits a man with his forearm from behind a wall, you can plainly see how two very different capes were used in that scene). As for Robin, I actually hope that Nolan NEVER gets around to him. There are soooo many ways to wrongly portray Robin. But that won't stop me from suggesting a portrayal of my own liking: First of all, change Robin from a 14-year-old boy to a 14-year-old girl. Not only is that presedented by comic book cannon, but it's also much more alluring. (Robin IV was a girl, and so was the Robin from TDKR.) Next, completely revamp the costume. Even Tiny Toons made fun of the fact that Robin's costume serves only to draw fire away from Batman LOL. Let's try a costume composed mostly of blacks or very dark greens, with some equally dark reds. Give the girl a mask that covers much more of her head. Between she and Batman, she needs the protection more than he does, right?

    Joker Origin

    by sirbroiler

Interesting that everyone says, 'this isn't going to be an origin story.' How do we know that for sure. Just because the movie opens with Joker already in play, doesn't mean that we won't see flashes or glipses of his past. Everyone knows that Nolan's stories are generally out of sequennce and full of flashbacks. I'm not convinced this story won't include his history, even if it's just a taste. What kind of Joker do you want people? This is more believeable.

Thanks for the piracy, you guys! It better stay up to. To Dreamworks and Warners if they do take it down: "Why so serious?" *crickets chirp*. What?

    Let's be honest...

    by I Hope You Die

These movies are stupid. Take Batman Begins... Ninja training? Pretending to be drunk and insulting everyone to get away from the party? Liam Neeson's long, long bad guy speech as the mansion burned down? "Do you have it in black?" Every moment Morgan Freeman was on screen? The Batmobile switching to its weird-ass targeting mode before doing a jump? The Batmobile jumping? A fire breathing horse? That movie was filled with almost as much cheese and cringe-inducing moments as Schumacher's later efforts. It was laughably bad. The ironic joke of pretending it was good was funny at first but it has gone on far too long. It was a joke, right? RIGHT?

After seeing the trailer on the big screen this afternoon I can't help but be truly excited for what Knight has in store for us. I really thnk that Ledger is going to give a comic book villian that will set a new standard. Also, I don't think that the marketing is giving away too much about the Joker. We don't really know what his plans are and we have seen nothing of Dent/Two Face. The scene in teh trailer when Ledger screams for Bats to hit him I think points to where the story may go. Joker may be trying to push Bats to kill him. See how far Batman is wiling to go to be Gothams "savior".

Suffered from some pretty on-the-nose dialog that over-used the word "fear" . Kind of like Brave Heart and "freedom". Begins didn't suffer from any plot or development problems that I could tell and I really dug it. The new one is supposed to be written by Nolan and his Brother so I hope this is an improvement. Think Wrath of Kahn vs The Motion Picture if you need an analogy.

  • December 15, 2007 5:55 PM CST

Has an urban 70s feel to me

    by Drath

I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing though. I mean I like the theatrical fantasy approach to super heroes, and this "more realistic" bull is just so pretentious in my opinion, but this looks very "out there" still. I think I may have grossly underestimated Heath Ledger, but I also agree that someone seems to be itching to make this about the Joker and not Batman. I guess the trouble is that the Batman is so fucking intense and brooding, you kind of need the Joker or the villain to break up all the angst. That said, I kind of hope that the Joker doesn't kick the bucket at the end. It's wrong to kill off the villains of these movies, and I still think they really did kill off Ra's Al-Gul on us (no Lazarus Pits are making it into this "more real" Batverse, people).

    Batman Begins' 3rd act

    by jdl82

...was great. I had no problems with it. But more importantly, it accomplished more than one necessary feat: 1) Scarecrow's gas attack on the city not only left many people insane (including criminals), but inspired genuine fear in the minds of Gothamites for Batman, whom they perceived as a dark, gliding demon with glowing eyes. And with regard to Batman's gliding over the city, that is not uncanonical; decades ago, the Batman could glide via his cape. Besides, just like a man who can't make spider-webs shouldn't call himself "Spider-Man," a man who can't fly shouldn't call himself "Batman." Lastly, the third act solidified the limits to which Batman would ever go to deliver justice: he will never intentionally take another's life.

    by Stormwatcher

I never thought of that but if the movie doesn't exist in a bubble, meaning it can reference the previous unlike parts 3 and 4 (oh god they sucked) then it can for that reason that the Riddler, Joker, Penguin are created. Awesome.

I hate it when you know a villain survived despite appearances and will only come back at a later date against all odds. Tiresome. Not surprising, just irritating. So I'm glad they iced Liam. If Ras comes back I won't be shocked, I will be pissed off. No more false resolutions! Resolve, and move on to the next challenge, just like they're doing. Makes a much more satisfying story arc to me. Of course, I didn't really like Ras' whole underground justice ninjas from across time thing. Rome fell because of a secret ninja society? Please. That said, the rest of Begins was freaking amazing and this trailer blew my hair to the back of this auditorium.

Fully agree. Makes it all the more weird when people around here talk about how much they love and appreciate "film." And creepier (although it's plenty creepy to begin with) when they describe how much they liked a movie in terms of ejaculation, or defecation. I mean, what exactly are they trying to say?

That said, reading these boards can be entertaining, I suppose. Sometimes informative.

Shit I hate when they kill off character that NEVER DIED in the comics!!! OK Green Goblin wasn't bad, but Harry? I mean he does die, but not so young. Plus he had a kid when he did. Doc Ock, Penguin, Jack's Joker, Venom, Two-Face, Kane.... LAME! STOP KILLING OFF CHARACTERS! SEND THEM TO THE GOTHAM ASYLUM or SOMETHING, but DON'T KILL THEM!!!!!! Not killing Scarecrow in Begins was awesome... leaves it open to bring him back. I hope they do the same with The Joker. So he can return in the 3rd film - "GOTHAM"

Oh I definetely expect the Joker to end up in Arkham at the end of this film. Personally, I found it quite arrogant of Burton to kill off two-thirds of the villains his films featured (Catwoman alone survived Burton's pen). Likewise, I was none-too-pleased that Shumaker killed Two-Face like he did. While it is, indeed, unfortunate that Harry Osborn died, I think that we can all agree that his death -- while contrary in many ways to comic canon -- was dealt with respectfully. And let's not forget that unlike Venom, his character was allowed to develop and mature over the course of not one or two but three entire films.

As for Raz'al Ghul, I, too, was disappointed that he died. And then I remembered that he is immortal in comic canon, and all became well.

My personal expectations for TDK, with regard to the way that it will deal with the Joker, are as follows: the Joker will kill someone dear to either Batman, Gordon, or Dent, in an effort to compell Batman to kill him. Batman will beat him to a bloody pulp, but will stop short of taking his life. Then the Joker will be thrown into Arkham, where the very best and brightest expert in abnormal psychology and criminal insanity, Dr. Harleen Quinby, will be assigned to rehabilitate him back to sanity.

My only fear is that, just like Burton's Joker, Burton's Catwoman, Schumacker's Riddler, and Shumacher's Two-Face, Nolan's Joker will succeed in his very first movie in learning Batman's true identity. That is such an old and used and -- to be honest -- shallow plot device, in my opinion. I truly hope that they decide against using it.

Begins' 3rd act had the ra's al ghul

    by messi

reveal. which is one of the most mahestic scenes I have seen in cinema. Obviously you wouldn't see it that way if you weren't a misanthropist, but just Ra's speech "when a forest grows too wild, a purging fire is innevitable and natural" all of that was just so powerful, here stands the most dangerous man on earth. And that middle eastern music along with the editing. Amazing. Plus the train fight, when Bats defeats Ra's and he has that anger and emotion in his voice and that cresendo in the score plays that is part of the 'falling' theme. Just amazing. what a climax. Brilliant filmmaking.

    Color me shocked....

    by wildphantom07

I've had this down as very much playing second fiddle to Indy....until now. THIS is the biggest movie of next summer right now. I can't remember a reaction to a trailer like this since TPM in '99. Over to you Paramount, we want that Indy trailer! What an incredible turnaround for the Bat. That tentative opening of Begins in 2005, then the word got round and it did just great. TDK might even break the opening weekend record. Where's the love for Batman & Robin on here. I think we all know that if it wasn't for that movie we wouldn't be here anticipating the second coming in July. It had to get THAT BAD for Warners to hold their hands up and reboot. "Take two of these and call me in the morning" - jesus fuckin christ!!

    I agree with Harry

    by Kragmose

On pirated trailers. The sound and video quality sucks, but there's nothing like hearing a whole audience cheer along.

RUN!!! DONT WALK TO SEE THIS IN IMAX!!!

    by Tim Tringle

I haven't watched this crude phone video, but last night I saw the real deal at the beginning of I am Legend. It is FULL IMAX SCREEN SIZE!!!! The opening Shot of Gotham is nothing less than Mind Blowing in the detail and size and it only gets more badass from there. If you only see this in a tiny little window, then YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW AWESOME THIS MOVIE LOOKS ALREADY!!!

    I wouldn't mind seeing Ra's return...

    by rbatty024

as a flashback. I wouldn't mind seeing more ninja training. Plus, even if Ra's is gone, that doesn't mean the organization is. Perhaps the title of "Demon Head" is passed down through generations.

"your mother and your life is overrated." Ooooooooh, wow. What teh burn!!! Go back to your fanboi wankage you loser. I hear that if you masturbate 1000 times in honor of Chris Nolan that third act won't suck so bad.

  • December 16, 2007 2:18 PM CST

    Why the 3rd act sucked.

    by Tai_Pan

Begins loses in the third act because the credibility dies out. Begins first two acts were very human and very personal. The last act squanders these gifts with utter silliness and an acute loss of reality. Batman releases a shitload of bats to escape from the police... yeah.... then a stormtrooper hands Crane a mask and says "time to play" Oooh!! Cheese. Goofy shaky cam fear drugs making "okay we det it they're poor" gothamites into Shawn of the dead rejects? Check. How about a ridiculous scene where Scarecrow shows up on a hirse without any purpose? Yep, got that too. Bad acting job by kid actor? Yep. Katie Holmes? Yep. God-awful set design for the Gotham slums? And how!Now here comes flying Batman. Fuuuuuuuck. Jim Gordon in the Batmobile lying down inside the transformer Batmobile and firing missiles? Are you fucking serious? And more flying Batman... ugh.

"Actually, no I take that back. Your mother isn't overrated. She's just as good as everyone says she is." I don't know your mother personally, but I'm sure she'd be ashamed of you for remarks. I, personally, am sorry for her insomuch as she has to raise a fucking douchebag such as yourself. Eat shit and STFU. Go ruminate on how cool and logical Gordon's explanation of escalation was. And Messi, that Rahs reveal was lame... particularly if you read the comic and knew Ducard was rather clearly Rahs.
