PITCH BLACK coming this Friday

Hey folks, Harry here. Ordinarily once I review a movie personally... I move on to writing about films that are yet to be seen. However, twice now with the site, this guy Vin Diesel has been in films that made me speak about them.... long after my initial viewing. First with THE IRON GIANT, and now with PITCH BLACK.

In your local newspapers you might very well spot ads for PITCH BLACK with a quote from me saying something along the lines of.... "THIS FILM IS NITRO! IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! NOT TO BE MISSED!"

Meanwhile, most of the reviews that have been popping up at various sites have been... mostly very positive... there have been a couple of hate-filled fire and brimstone style reviews of this film. It is my personal opinion that these people have their heads firmly lodged in with the kernals of corn buried deep with the fleshy mounds of the asscheeks.

PITCH BLACK is not a wholly original movie. But then... neither was TERMINATOR, ALIEN, ALIENS, THE ROAD WARRIOR or just about any other sci fi film you can mention (with the possible exceptions of BARBARELLA and 2001). PITCH BLACK is a formula film that completely nails it.

The best comparison I can come up with... is with food (gosh I wonder why I thought of that?) If you have ever had GREAT HOME MADE PECAN PIE... the type of Pecan pie that has a bit of alcohol, some nutmeg... fresh pecans... all sorts of bad for you items, etc... That Pecan Pie that when you take a bite you don't begin chewing right off. You hold it in your mouth... push it around with your tongue... make YUM YUM noises, then chew? Well... That's what this is.

You see... For me... ALIENS, ALIEN, ROAD WARRIOR, ETC... They are all great PECAN PIES.... But films like oh... OUTLAND and FLASH GORDON... well they are just mass market Pecan Pies. Films like SUPERNOVA, EVENT HORIZON and LOST IN SPACE... well they are that bottom of the barrel sludge pies that you take a bite out of... Chew politely... then push the plate away and say... "Whew... I'm full!" and promptly leave the table.

They are all Pecan Pies. They all have Pecans, Crust, filling stuff and are cooked in an oven (albeit the worst are cooked in a Microwave Oven). But for some reason... that extra bit of enthusiasm... that bit of flair... Movies like PITCH BLACK just taste so much better than the average Pecan Pie.

When you go to go see PITCH BLACK this weekend... Don't go looking for the 'GREATEST SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME'... This movie is NITRO. What does that mean?

Well... You see... NITRO is an accelerant. It is a volatile substance that can really get things going. But don't shake it up too much or it'll blow up in your face. NITRO is also a wrestler that can kick your ass. Nitro can also be short for Nitrous Oxide.... Meaning, it can give you a euphoric sense of glee. And it speeds up your heart. When I said that in my initial review... this is what I meant.

Also this weekend... The Trailer for THE X-MEN is going out. It might very well be attached to PITCH BLACK... as well as THE WHOLE NINE YARDS.. but if you've been reading reviews for THE WHOLE NINE YARDS, you'll know that that film is a piece of shit. PITCH BLACK rocks! Take some friends... don't hype em up. Just take them along for the ride. But see this film opening weekend. Cause... they... Them powers that be, need to see that a kickass well made sci fi film with no HEADLINE talent (as of yet, Vin Diesel will be someday) can be a successful venture.

I'm very pleased with the marketing of this film. It is very much, what I had hoped for when I saw this film last year. For nearly a sixth of the budget of SUPERNOVA, you get a film that should... if you aren't trying to overanalyze everything... that you should have ALOT of fun with.

This is USA FILMS' biggest release ever. And I hope to hell it pays off for them. Because frankly... USA FILMS has just been a remarkable little company so far. And it's been a pure pleasure to watch them release the films they have over the past 5-6 months. This is the first REAL winner of 2000, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. And remember... It's just a great heaping load of Pecan Pie.
