Lord Summerisle chats about THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS!
Hey folks, Harry here with the latest praising of THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS! Unfortunately, I can't tell you that this one is coming to a theater near us here in the states. Apparently - it's going straight to either cable or dvd. So unfair. Good films deserve to be seen on the big screen! Here ya go...
Hi Harry,
long time, first time etc...
I had the pleasure of attending a screening of the film "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" in London last night, with Geoffery Rush and director Stephen Hopkins in attendance (more later).
The film is wonderful and Geoffery Rush inhabits every moment of his time on screen as the iconic Sellers. As a man who never even really knew his own identity it is a credit to Rush that he was so able to become this elusive character on screen.
The film starts with Sellers already successful with on the radio with The Goon Show and tracks his life and career in films, covering all his greatest roles as well as the breakdown of his first marriage and his second marrage to Britt Ekland, played very well by the ever-gorgeous Charlize Theron.
As such the film doesn't really have a plot but instead takes you through his life and career with the use of a wonderful screenplay and many interesting plot, narrative and cinematic devices. Rush expertly accents the dichotomy of a man who never really knew himself and could ever only really be whatever particular character he was inhabiting at the time.
Rush's Inspector Clouseau and Dr Strangelove are spot on and absolutely hysterical. If they were looking for a new Clouseau in the upcoming Pink Panther film then they missed a great opportunity.
Afterwards Rush and Hopkins answered questions from the audience and both were intersting and engaging speakers. Hopkins especially showed how much a labour of love this project has been for him and it is refreshing to see such a diffferent film from him when compared to the rest of his body of work.
It is a shame perhaps that this film won't get a theatrical release in the US, instead look for it soon on HBO...everyone else...if it's in a cinema near you I highly recommend it.
Keep it up Harry,
call me...Lord Summerisle.
